Abstract

The activation technique for calibrating neutron sources is extended to the case of a three-dimensional plasma (of any shape, with any spatial profile and any angular dependence of the neutron emission) and of a three-dimensional activation detector. Applications to the Frascati 1 MJ Plasma Focus are shortly described. Approximate formulas necessary in the case of a toroidal plasma are derived. Results of calculations carried out to interpret PLT experimental data by three line plasma models are compared with those obtained by six toroidal plasma models characterized by three radial profiles (highly peaked, squared parabolic and flat) and by two end truncations (normal and oblique) of the plasma column. Suggestions aimed at improving the determination of the type of neutron emission and the calibration of a neutron counter by the activation technique are given.
