MICRODOSIMETRIC COUNTERS IN RADIATION PROTECTION. PROCEEDINGS OF A WORKSHOP HELD AT HOMBURG - SAAR, MAY 15-17, 1984.
Within EURADOS (European Radiation Dosimetry Group) four working groups have been established, to study: application of microdosimetric principles in radiation protection (working group 1); problems of beta and low energy photon radiations (2); application of thermoluminescence to routine personal dosimetry (3); development of computer programs for dosimetric problems (4). Working group 1 has concentrated on the practical implementation of microdosimetric counters in radiation protection; this volume contains the proceedings of a workshop on microdosimetric or tissue equivalent proportional counters, which are able to measure the probability distribution of absorbed dose as a function of the energy, imparted to a small sensitive volume by single energetic particles, can assist in the evaluation of dose equivalent for penetrating radiations, can be given desired energy responses to x-rays, gamma rays and neutron for wide ranges of energies and moreover can be made sufficiently sensitive to work as an area or individual dosimeter. The papers presented are grouped under headings: "Background information to the employment of low pressure proportional counters in radiation protection", "interaction characteristics and response of proportional counters", and, "practical realisation of dose equivalent: instruments, methods and calibration". The volume presents the current state of the art in the use of microdosimetric counters in radiation protection.
