Abstract

The French mining Company "Compagnie Francaise de Mokta" is operating heap leaching of uranium ores. Two research programs, 1979 and 1981, have allowed the optimisation of a new and original technology on heap leaching. This new technology is expected to improve heap leaching economy and environmental protection. A patent has been taken in June 1983. This technology, consists in the injection of leaching liquors in vertical drills protected by perforated pipes, protected with compacted material above which coarse gravel drains the rain water. This gives the following advantages: + no effect of weather conditions + straight control of the leaching liquors, + large increase in metal recovery and efficiency, + no pollution from solutions or ores + low impact on the environment, land reclaiming is done during exploitation. This technology by modules allows recovery of metal from small orebody by heap leaching in better economic conditions. It is also possible to recover other metals than uranium from such a heap leaching technology with high metal recovery.
