EXTRACTION OF URANIUM FROM PARANESTI LOW-GRADE ORE BY HEAP LEACHING
Exploration during the past 5 years has identified a number of uranium deposits in the area of Paranesti, among them Archodovouni, which contains about 180 tons of U-3O-8, and is low grade, about 400 ppm of U-3O-8. The size of the other deposits is not yet known. The deposit located on the top of Archodovouni hill, is mainly formed by secondary uranium minerals (autunite, metautunite, hydroautunite) filling fractures and can be exploited in an open pit. As the mineralization is located in a granitic environment without harmful constituents, uranium can be easily extracted by heap leaching. So, the objective of this research program is the study of sulfuric acid leaching of the ore, by column percolation and conventional heap experiments. A report describing all the IGME work performed from February 1983 (start) to May 1983, has been produced. This presentation contains all the results obtained up to now.
