Abstract

This book contains the lectures presented at a seminar organised by the Commission of the European Communities at the Joint Research Centre, Petten Establishment, The Netherlands, and is part of a continuing series of courses - seminars within the framework of the Information Centre of the High Temperature Materials Research Programme. The lectures were intended to present a summary of relevant techniques for studying surfaces. The first chapter presents an overview of the chemical characterisation of the surfaces and interfaces for the fine timing of mechanical properties of alloys. The following chapters provide the reader with an introduction to the physical principles instrumentation and application of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, low energy ion scattering and scanning electron microscopy. The final chapter contains a detailed discussion of the electron specimen interaction and the information obtained in a scanning electron microscope.
