ROLE OF THE COMMISSION OF EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES IN THE DISSEMINATION OF SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL INFORMATION
The role of the Commission in the realm of scientific and technical information is defined partly by certain clauses in three European treaties (art. 55 of the CECA treaty; art. 12-29 of the EURATOM treaty; art. 2 of the EEC treaty), and partly by the powers attributed to the Commission following the development and execution of its political, economic, technological and social aims and objectives. The Commission has developed a whole range of methods and tools to ensure the dissemination of scientific, technical and other information throughout the Community. These are discussed in three main groups: dissemination of scientific and technical information resulting from Community research and development programmes; promotion of the dissemination of specific information by modernizing infrastructures in the Community; and promotion of infrastructures for dissemination by the development of new information technologies.
