THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE INFORMATION MARKET IN THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY - THE COMMISSION'S APPROACH
Community efforts to promote the development of the European specialised information market (through the implementation of Euronet) have led to a rapid growth in intra-Community exchanges of information. However, the European Information market is still lagging five years behind the North American market. In certain fields, our industries are extremely dependent on non-Community information sources. The Commission has decided to respond to this situation on two fronts: the supply side, through the launch of a five-year Community programme for the development of the specialised information market in Europe; the market environment, through a process of in-depth discussions with Member States in order to define a Community information market policy aimed at lowering barriers which hinder the development of the market and at better defending Community interests in information issues within international forums.
