Abstract

A collection of the papers and reports presented at the seminar organized by the Commission of the European Communities, and held in Brussels, Belgium, on 17 and 18 October 1983. The seminar is part of the Commission's strategy for promoting the exchange of information in this important but complex area of scientific policy. The papers presented describe and analyse the different methods and procedures of evaluation currently applied to R&D in the Community's member states, in the USA and in Japan. They also review the evaluation services currently run by the Community, its philosophy and strategy for the future. Evaluation of R&D programmes is a recent but rapidly evolving discipline and has aroused the interest not only of the scientific community but also of those responsible for R&D policy formation and its practical management. This publication aims to increase exploration in a field of growing importance, by tracing its recent development and indicating areas of future research.
