Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

This report gives an account of research under COST project 72 on measurement of precipitation by radar. The project was aimed at investigating how the use of existing and planned weather radars in Europe could be improved when the needs of the main user groups were collectively taken into account, bearing in mind the possibility to exchange radar data across national boundaries. The project organized systematic data collection among signatories in a pilot project in which radar data from the UK, France, Switzerland, Ireland and the Netherlands were combined into a composite computer picture covering the areas in question. Meteosat satellite data were used to fill the gap between radars, and the COST 72 product so obtained was transmitted to several assessment centres to collect information on the usability of data. The Management Committee formed and accepted a model specification for the next generation of weather radars, and assessed the feasibility of a European weather radar network.
