Abstract

A simplified design has been proposed for a small- scale fluid bed combustor - gasifier system. Bench scale cold tests facilities have been used to optimize the operating parameters by a thermal tracing technique. Circulating rates as high as 1000 kg/s m**2 have been achieved. The selected fuel consists of biomass pellets: combustion rate and segregation tendencies have been determined in small-scale units. Thermogravimetry and thermal differential analyses have been used in an air and in a N-2 - CO-2 atmosphere to define the heat of the main reactions and the temperatures at which they take place. Steam gasification has been studied in a micropilot heated fluid bed. It produces a gas containing about 40% H-2. A pilot unit (200 kg/h) has been constructed and the combustion cell has been operated successfully. Combustion efficiencies as high as 97.8% were obtained, while the thermal efficiency is approximately 83%.
