Résumé

The aim of the present work is the selection of wear resistant materials, treatments or coatings, for a piston in a cylinder, with the following operating conditions: no lubrication; linear reciprocating motion; high speed (from 3 to 10 m/s); low radial stress (< 0.5 bar). There are many potential applications for such materials in industry : Stirling cycle engines and coolers, clean gas or vapour reciprocating compressors, Diesel engines in the future. Dry bearings have already been designed, but for lower speeds and higher stresses. This experimental program tests and compares various bearings in the above- mentioned conditions. Two test benches were used, and six couples of materials for a piston and a cylinder were tested. Good performances were experienced for two types of couples of materials: tungsten carbide for the cylinder, and chromium oxide for the piston; nitrided stainless steel for the cylinder, and molybdenum for the piston, with MoS-2 impregnation. The last couple was chosen for the bearings of the Stirling engine test model, and it has been working for about 300 hours without any problem.
