ACID DEPOSITION - RESEARCH ACTIVITY BY THE EEC COMMISSION
The environmental research activities of the EEC Commission are run by the Directorate General XII and are divided into two closely interconnected groupings:"Intra- "Intramural" or "direct" research, conducted at ISPRA Community Research Centre; and "extramural" or contractual research conducted by the Directorate General in Brussels. Both groups of research activities aim to support the objectives of the Commission's environmental policies, formulated by the Directorate General XI and set out in the "Piano di Azione sull'Ambiente 1982 - 1986"("Plan of Action on the Environment 1982 - 1986") approved by the Community's Council of Ministers. Because of the high priority given by the Commission to research into acid deposition, Ispra has redirected part of its research activities to this subject and the Council of Ministers has recently allocated a supplementary budget to contractual and planned research following a revision of its 1981 - 1985 programme. These research activities will reconsider the physico-chemical behaviour of atmospheric pollutants (analysis, chemical and photochemical reactions, methods of dispersal, modelling); their effects on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems (especially forests); and the actions taken towards reducing these emissions.
