Abstract

A general method has been set up for optimizing the design of a nuclear power plant with a view to decommissioning. Starting from the preliminary design and the presumed life, it is possible to define the optimum decommissioning strategy and the optimum dismantling sequence from a point of view of cost and radiological risk. Having individuated this strategy and this sequence, it is possible to determine the most critical points (with respect to cost and risk); then the designer is able to modify his design in order to improve the critical items. Modifications in design give a new optimum sequence for dismantling, then new critical points arise and then further modifications are needed. The repetitivity needed by this method requires the use of a computer for an economic utilization. The present study contains the individuation of the techniques of analysis and the definition of all methods to handle the problem analytically, but it does not contain the development of a computer code. An example is carried out manually starting from the preliminary design of the "Fuel Building" of the "Progetto Unificato Nucleare" of the PWR power plants foreseen in the Italian energy plan.
