Abstract

This study compares conventional and advanced concepts and the fossil based routes for the production of hydrogen by electrolysis of water. It is subdivided into three technical sections: state of the art (containing a survey of the technology available today and describing the constituent components of an Alkaline Water Electrolysis unit); concepts for improved technologies (for low, medium and high temperature) (presenting the concepts submitted by five contractors from several countries plus several components developed by further contractors). Concerning total specific cost, a decrease could not be achieved due to higher current densities and to some extent due also to more valuable construction materials. This is shown in the section "Evaluation" which firstly summarizes the different concepts, then discusses the cost of fossil based hydrogen, compares this with the cost of electrolysis and finally gives recommendations for further R&D. The Annex contains Technical Data of the Equipment, Process Flow Sheets, a Design of the Electrolyzers and some Photographs as well as the References and the detailed Calculation Tables.
