THE INTERCOMPARISON OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL MEASUREMENTS TAKEN FROM COORDINATE MEASURING MACHINES (CMMSS)
The work in this report was carried out to determine variations in measuring performance of a range of CMMs when used to measure transfer standards of open frame forms produced from carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), and to establish the suitability of the frames as transfer standards for CMMs. The findings show that CFRP frames are dimensionally stable, and provide an accurate method of determining overall and localized deficiencies in CMMs. In addition they are useful for comparing the performance of machines of varying specification. The range of results from the 10 machines examined variations in size averaging +- 10 mum from the calibrated lengths. For machines of higher specification this value was generally about +- 5 mum.
