The JRC Solar Energy Programme has two main orientations: operation of test facilities and the definition of testing procedures and methodologies, and: exploratory research in some specific areas, where industrial applications are still uncertain and preliminary information could be useful for orienting future development work. It contains four projects: Project I: ESTI (European Solar Test Installation): This deals with the construction and operation of a number of indoor and outdoor test facilities for thermal and photovoltaic convertors and with related methodology services as public service. Project II: Habitat and low temperature applications, for study and modelling of integrated systems for heating and cooling. Project III: Solar power plant materials, for improvement of solar power plant performances through appropriate contributions in the field of selective materials. Project IV: Photoelectrochemical and photochemical conversion, for the exploration of advanced techniques for the conversion of solar energy into electrical or chemical energy. Main approaches are related to liquid semiconductor junction solar cells and photochemical water splitting. At the end of the 1980 - 1983 programme the Solar Energy Programme at Ispra has reached the planned full level of operation and a complete set of installations and investments for the evaluation of solar energy technologies and systems, with the related competences.
