DIE METASTASIERUNG DES STRAHLENINDUZIERTEN OSTEOSARKOMS DER MAUS
Osteosarcomas were induced in female NMRI mice by incorporation of the short-lived alpha emitters 224-Ra or 227-Th or the mother nuclide of 227-Th, 227-Ac or the short-lived beta emitter 177-Lu. In 16 % of the osteosarcomas metastasis was found. The majority of the metastases occurred in the liver, spleen and lung. The incidence of metastasis was not significantly increased in cases - of multicentric osteosarcoma - with tumour diameter larger than 5 mm - with predominantly cellular osteosarcomas - with simultaneously occurring malignant lymphoma. But osteosarcomas of the proximal caudal vertebrae showed a significantly higher risk of metastasic spread than tumours of the rest of the vertebral column. Osteosarcomas occurring at old age metastasize somewhat more frequently than tumours occurring at younger age. Radiation induced osteosarcomas of female BALB/c and CBA mice metastasize significantly less frequently (5% and lower) than tumours of the NMRI mice.
