SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO EXAMINE THE TOXICITY AND ECOTOXICITY OF CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS
Under the heading "Principles and Definitions" the report gives the reasons for advice requested, evidence leading to the Committee, opinion and the Committee's opinion for subjects: inhalation LC-50 values in toxicity classification; definitions concerning biodegradable chemical substance; definitions concerning the significance of levels of acute toxicity of chemical substances for aquatic organisms; parameters for the selection of existing chemical substances for evaluation; advice on grouping of carcinogenic - teratogenic - mutagenic substances. The same approach is adopted for the section on "Evaluations" concerning cadmium; benzene in balloon making kits; tris(1-aziridinyl) phosphine oxide: flame retardant; 3,3' dimethoxybenzidine in sneezing powders; ammonium polysulphides in stink bombs; methylbromoacetate: tear gas capsules as toys; polybrominated biphenyls: flame retardant; lead paint for childrens' toys; artificial pearls varnished with lead salts; formaldehyde; carbon tetrachloride, and for the chapter on "Quality Objectives in Aquatic Environment" for: cadmium; DDT - lindane and non- lindane isomers of HCH; benzene, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride; hexachlorobenzene and hexachlorobutadiene; pentachlorophenol.
