INFORMATICS - ANNUAL PROGRESS REPORT 1983.
The programme "Informatics" consists of three main items: research work in the field of Teleinformatics to extend and to improve the communication between geographically disseminated computers; management of the EUROpean COmputer Programme Institute (EUROCOPI) (integration of research and service activities in software evaluation and dissemination); running the European Shielding Information Service (ESIS), which analyses, evaluates and synthetizes information on shielding data and calculation methods, and performs a shielding benchmark experiment. During 1983 work in the Teleinformatics project concerned, R/D in Local Area Networks (LAN), Satellite Data Transmission and Internetworking and Transport Service. The work on satellite data transmission and internetworking consisted of an internetworking protocol for data transfer across different types of networks. Progress was also made with the POSTMAN function (automatic delivery of the mail to its destination location). The EUROCOPI project was mainly concentrated on the services activities, aiming at providing EC users of scientific/technical computer program information. An experiment was also started for conversion of FORTRAN programs developed on CDC Computer Systems. The ESIS project's main interest was focused on neutron deep penetration measurements in the sodium benchmark experiment.
