THE JRC COVA PROGRAMME
The COVA (Code Validation) program is a joint enterprise by the UKAEA and the CEC Joint Research Centre at Ispra to provide especially designed experimental data for the validation of LMFBR primary containment codes. Low-density explosive charges have been detonated within model reactor vessels of gradually increasing complexity and detailed pressure histories, strain histories, etc. recorded. COVA also has a theoretical component, involving code development and the investigation of material behaviour (vessel, steel and water) under explosive loading. This final report describes part of the work performed at JRC-Ispra and provides detailed comparisons of experimental records and the predictions of the finite difference containment codes SEURBNUK (Eulerian) and ASTARTE (Lagrangean). The overall performance of the codes is now good but problems with differences in experimental and numerical results related to roof loading and hoop strains in deformable vessels remain.
