EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF PU, AM AND CM ISOTOPIC CROSS SECTIONS IN A LIGHT WATER REACTOR NEUTRON SPECTRUM
For plutonium recycling in light water reactors, the knowledge of capture cross-section of the higher plutonium isotopes and americium isotopes is important. In order to reduce the uncertainties, the CEA has performed an irradiation of pure nuclides in the MELUSINE swimming pool reactor at Grenoble. Trace amounts of the nuclides studied, were introduced in the pellets of the central pin of an experimental 5 x 5 pin assembly. The neutron spectrum was close to PWR spectrum. After irradiation, the samples were analyzed by conventional mass spectrometry and alpha spectrometry techniques. The capture rate for each isotope was determined from variation in the daughter nuclide. After correction for the effects, specific to the irradiation conditions, a set of integral capture cross-sections (240-Pu, 241-Pu, 242-Pu, 241-Am, 243-Am, 244-Cm) referenced to 235 U fission, was obtained. The accuracies of measurements are about 2% or 3% (2 sigma).
