ANAEROBIC DIGESTION AND CARBOHYDRATE HYDROLYSIS OF WASTE. PROCEEDINGS OF AN INFORMATION SYMPOSIUM UNDER THE EEC PROGRAMME ON RECYCLING OF URBAN AND INDUSTRIAL WASTE, LUXEMBOURG, MAY 8-10, 1984.
This volume contains the proceedings of a seminar organized in the framework of the EEC R & D programme on Recycling of Urban and Industrial Waste before a background of about 40 shared cost contracts attributed in the field of anaerobic digestion and carbohydrate hydrolysis of waste (Area III of the programme); it includes the full text of the survey papers, summaries of the contractors' reports and descriptions of the posters presented as well as reports on discussions. Among the specific areas which need to be studied are: establishment of culture collection of relevant cellulolytic microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi; genetic manipulation of cellulase and hemicellulase positive microorganisms; physiological studies to optimize cellulase activities; mixed culture studies; + and concerning anaerobic digestion: fundamental research is needed into applications of biomethanization; the characterization of obligate proton reducing and acetogenic bacteria (for metabolizing fatty acids and aromatic compounds); the physiology of sulfate reducing bacteria; direct anaerobic treatment of cold domestic waste waters; anaerobic pretreatment of obnoxious industrial waste waters; evaluation of experience gained in several countries concerning digesters for agricultural wastes.
