HANDBOOK OF CHARCOAL MAKING
This handbook was prepared by the author for the CEC within the framework of its R & D programme on biomass. It fills a gap in the flow of information especially on industrial charcoal making which had been opening up since the late nineteen-forties. The book contains chapters on: history and fundamentals of the charcoal process; traditional methods of the smallholder charcoal-maker (in various parts of the world); concepts and technology for the industrial charcoal-maker; techniques for recovering commercial products from pyrolysis oil; raw materials supply; end use markets for charcoal and charcoal by-products; planning a charcoal venture and selection of equipment; charcoal briquettes and activated charcoal manufacturing; safety precautions and environmental considerations; charcoal laboratory work; 4 appendices focus on: case studies; energy distribution diagram; addresses of consultants, institutes and equipment suppliers; and conversion tables. Numerous illustrations accompany the written information. The book will serve as a review book of the state of the art and as a reference book for future R & D in view of technical improvements and new processes of charcoal making and pyrolysis in general.
