THERMAL SEPARATION OF THICK WALLED CLAD COMPONENTS OF THE PRIMARY CIRCUIT OF NUCLEAR POWER STATIONS
It was the aim of this research project to develop a method based on the combination of plasma + and autogenous burners for the dismembering of the pressure vessels of light water reactors. In individual cases the dusts and aerosols involved may be very radioactive, the technique of separation of the harmful substances must be controllable. In order to be able to design a filter combination for a cutting plant, it is necessary to know amount and size of particles of the dusts and aerosols which occur during thermal dismantling. Furthermore the suitability of filter systems for the separation has to be examined. In order to optimize the cutting parameters, experiments were carried out, using the combined cutting method, on inactive heavy-sectioned clad components, thickness between 150 and 600 mm. It was possible to prove that it is, indeed, possible to control the separation of the dusts and aerosols caused in combination cutting method. On an extraction line, containing three filter units connected in series, total extraction levels between 99,99 and 99,9999% were achieved. However, useful life and dust storage capacity are not yet adequate. It was possible to prove the suitability, i.e. the controllability of the combination cutting technique as method for the separation of thick walled clad components in the programme of experiments carried out here.
