Abstract

This paper contains a review of the status and future of factual materials data banks of engineering materials. In three chapters, the paper: surveys the "Development Status of Material Data Banks' (providing a survey of bibliographic on-line bases worldwide, a review of factual data banks storing technically relevant properties of engineering materials, and a table suitable for a rough classification of material data bases, furthermore : a discussion of European data banks which have reached a development status enabling their technical access via a public data network, and a shorter survey of American and of Japanese materials properties data bases); gives an "Account of Collaboration towards Comprehensive Data Networks": in the U.S, in the E.C. both on national and C.E.C. levels, in Japan and worldwide, CODATA; and it provides a "Concluding Summary on Actual Goals and Problems' in which the goals for data base development, goals for networking, main problems areas, and: international and intercontinental aspects are neatly set out.
