When new computing facilities became available at Culham, GHOST was revised in line with the latest hardware and software developments. The revised and enhanced system is known as GHOST-80. This manual describes the new system, and consists of the following three parts: + Introduction including a simple example program to illus-trate the basic facilities provided. + Reference section, describing in detail the full facilities provided by GHOST; this is illustrated with many examples, and as far as possible, done without reference to any particular computer or device. + The third section gives the details of how GHOST may be linked with a program, and which graphics utilities are available in addition. Some parts will be implementation dependent, for example the way in which the utility programs are invoked. The system complies with the 1978 ANSI standard of the language FORTRAN (i.e. FORTRAN 77). This ensures a reasonable degree of portability: GHOST is available on most current widely used computers. In order to maintain compatibility with the previously available FORTRAN 66 version, the FORTRAN 66 calls are also given where they differ. It is intended that this document should serve as both a teaching and reference manual. It supersedes all previous GHOST manuals.
