Abstract

This paper was given at the 13th Symposium on Fusion Technology held at Varese, September 1984. It provides a brief summary of the work carried out during the construction phase: the preparation of the machine parts in the assembly hall (vacuum vessel, octants, poloidal field coils) and their assembly in the torus hall; also some remarks on organisatorial experiences and problems encountered during assembly. Concerning the commissioning of JET, the subsystems: general services, toroidal field, poloidal field, vacuum and diagnostics, commissioned January to May 1983 are briefly described together with commissioning tests for the subsystems (4 classes dependent on the hazards and interfaces involved). The CODAS (Control and Data Acquisition System) computer configuration and the computers required for initial operation were fully commissioned and tests were carried out checking the combined operation of toroidal and poloidal field systems. The first JET operation was carried out in two phases, during the 2nd wall conditioning was carried out and the limiters tried; plasma discharges were obtained: first in the so-called fast rise mode, then extended to flat top discharges; moreover a preliminary analysis of shot 983 was carried out.
