EXTRACTION AND ACCELERATION OF H IONS FROM A MAGNETIC MULTIPOLE SOURCE
Experimental measurements of an H accelerator are described, based on extraction of H ions and electrons from a magnetic multipole volume H source. The accelerator includes a trap for the extracted electrons, which gives an overall accelerator power efficiency of 81%. Measurements of the focussing properties of the accelerator are described and compared with a simple analytic model for the ion trajectories. This H accelerator has several important focussing advantages for neutral beam injection over comparable positive ion accelerator columns.
