Abstract

A detailed comparison of the HF power deposition, as determined experimentally, with the prediction of a numerical model has been performed successfully for a few experiments (e.g. WEGA III). However, even in the majority of experimental cases, when the elements of a detailed power balance are not available, it is possible to check (roughly, but in a large parameter range) the consistency of the heating with the theory of wave absorption by the ions, provided general assumptions are made. Assuming in particular a neoclassical scaling of the ion energy confinement time, it is shown that the results of all LH experiments in which ion heating has been observed, is in fair agreement with the theoretical predictions, both in terms of absolute value and functional dependence.
