Abstract

A 100 GHz tube, theoretically capable of delivering over 200 kW with 30 % efficiency without spurious oscillations, is now under assembly. The pulse length will probably be limited initially by different factors including the dielectric losses in the first windows. Good beam transmission at 60 kV, 8 A has been achieved in 100 ms pulses, 0.1 Hertz repetition rate. 80 kV has been sustained in continuous operation on tubes of smaller diameter than the final design. A number of testing procedures of high power millimetric tubes are being improved or implemented. A separate study of the more critical points of the operation in 100 ms pulses and in CW operation has now reached the stage of experimentation. We think to obtain in the coming months high power oscillations at 100 GHz in pulses of at least a few milliseconds, and to find the means to reach the design values in due time.
