Abstract

A 3 m**3 tunnel drying for fruits and vegetables has been built and tested in a cooperative in the south of France. As a distinctive feature it is provided with a set of 24 m**2 solar collectors and completed with an electric heater (12 kw), which heats the air before it enters the dryer. This prototype has shown that it is possible to produce dried fruits under the necessary hygienic conditions, while greatly economizing on energy consumption. Thus, due to the presence of suitable conditions (sunny fruit producing regions), it is possible to produce at competitive price high quality dried fruits (cherries, apricots, peaches, figs, apples, pears), in the Pyrenees Orientales. A detailed study of the French and European market for dried fruit is in progress and a compact industrial model of the solar dryer using the information obtained from this demonstration will soon be installed in a workshop of an enterprise in Perpignan.
