LOWER HYBRID HEATING AND CURRENT DRIVE ON PETULA-B
1.25 GHz Lower Hybrid waves have been launched into Petula-B with two four-waveguide couplers. To date, 830 kW of net RF power have been injected into the torus. An efficient ion heating of eta-I about 3.9 eV 10**13 cm**-3/kW is obtained at a density of n-e = 6. x 10**13cm**-3 in D-2 plasmas. Experiments at lower densities (n-e <or= 3 x 10**13 cm**-3) have demonstrated RF current drive. The current drive efficiency has been found to increase with the magnetic field. Plasma currents up to 200 kA have been sustained without the help of ohmic current. This proved to be feasible even at q(a) approximately equal to 2.
