TECHNOLOGICAL PROBLEMS OF A HIGH POWER LOWER HYBRID ADDITIONAL HEATING SYSTEM FOR FTU AT 8 GHZ
A high power 8 GHz additional heating system for FTU has been designed by the Radiofrequency FTU team at the ENEA Frascati Laboratory. The major technological problems on such a system are being investigated. Two types of tubes: klystrons or gyrotrons appear suitable. 250 kW klystrons will be readily available on the market. A contract has been placed with a European industry for the development of 500 kW gyrotrons. Transfer of power from the tubes to the Tokamak over a 50 m distance will require the use of oversized circular waveguides in the TE degrees 01- mode. A test bench, including a 25 kW CW klystron at 8 GHz, the mode converters from TE$4Z-10 to TE degrees 01- and vice versa, a transmission length of circular waveguide and a prototype antenna, including the lambda/2 ceramic windows, is under construction. A preliminary design of the 8x8 coupling grill has been done and prototypes of the most critical items are under development.
