CONSIDERATIONS ON LIMITER PERFORMANCE IN TEXTOR UNDER FULL PLASMA HEATING
A toroidal belt limiter ALT-II pumped through 8 portholes is being developed for TEXTOR as a joint IEA - cooperation project. The exposed surface area is 2.8 m**2. The ALT-II project is to follow the single head pump limiter module ALT-I presently installed. In the final stage of the experimental programme the total heating power absorbed by the plasma will be 4.2 + 6.2 MW. Methods of heating and their power fractions: Ohmic heating 0.5 + 0.7 MW, ICRH 1.5 + 2.5 MW, and Neutral injection 2 x 1.1 + 2 x 1.5 MW; duration of heating pulse: 3 secs. Average heat flux to the wall: 0.11 + 0.16 MW/m**2; Assumed fraction of the total power deposited onto the toroidal belt limiter: eta = 15 %. Expected power flux density to the limiter: 150 + 220 W/cm**2 energy flux density: 450 + 660 J/cm**2. The maximum local or temporal excursions from these values are expected to be less than a factor of 10 and of 3, respectively. Means foreseen for impurity control: gas puffing together with particle exhaust, low-Z materials, boundary ergodization.
