Abstract

The performance requirements and problems anticipated for neutral beam heating, ion cyclotron frequency heating, lower hybrid wave heating, electron cyclotron heating are summarized; the standing of the NET and INTOR projects concerning heating defined: For NET no reference heating method has been selected so far. The basic NET device is conceived to be in principle compatible with all these methods. It is expected that further research in all heating methods together with ongoing conceptual design studies of reactor grade launching structures, will permit to make a choice of a reference heating concept and of a back-up option for NET in three to four years. These will then have to be vigourously developed, in particular also the launching structures. The choice to be made will also depend on how other functions like start-up assist and current drive if needed and viable, can be covered best. For INTOR, ion cyclotron heating was selected as reference heating method while neutral beam heating was chosen as back-up option. The main issues to be clarified in the field of Tokamak plasma heating physics in general are enumerated in brief.
