Abstract

The Frascati PF device is operated in a Mather type geometry and in the neutron optimized mode of operation (W-o =250 kJ, p =3 Torr to W-o =560 kJ, p =8 Torr). The neutrons are studied by the time-of-flight method; four X-ray detectors with different energies windows record the X-ray yield time dependences. Special attention is paid to the proper timing of all events. The conclusions are: i) The neutron emission has two distinct well time resolved activities, coinciding with the high voltage and the hard X-ray activities. ii) The simple post-acceleration model (the same starting energies of electrons and ion streams, E-j = 80 keV, a full confinement with account of the slowing down on a cold background plasma with constant density and temperature is consistent with both present and past measurement made at Frascati.
