Abstract

An analytic technique, devised by Mercier and Luc, for solving the Grad-Shafranov equation in the neighbourhood of a single flux surface is described in detail. As an application of the resulting equilibrium we derive the corresponding ballooning mode equation. The results are illustrated by considering the large aspect ratio, circular flux surface Tokamak.
