Abstract

The coolant flow through the perforated dip plate during a hypothetical core disruptive accident (HCDA) in a liquid metal fast breeder reactor was simulated in a one- dimensional model. Several experiments (110) with a water - air mixture as fluid simulating the coolant were run. The pressure drop through the dip plate, the forces acting on the dip plate and on the upper plate, acceleration and displacement of the piston, the air volumetric fraction and the size of the air bubbles were measured in a wide range of Strouhal and acceleration numbers. The flow pattern downstream the dip plate was filmed by using a high speed camera. The present report contains the most significative experimental results.
