Abstract

This publication contains the proceedings of a Workshop held in Brussels on 14-15 November, 1984, under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities, as part of the CEC Animal Husbandry Major Coordination actions. The theme of the Workshop was "Brucella melitensis" and it was the first CEC meeting dealing with B. melitensis animal infection in Europe. The present publication gives in full the 26 papers presented at the Workshop together with a report on a round table on the standardization of B. melitensis diagnosis procedures. The 26 papers cover five main groups of topics : (1) Taxonomy of Brucella members, (2) current situation of B. melitensis infection in the European Community and in neighbouring countries i.e. Portugal and Spain, (3) diagnosis, (4) epidemiology, (5) immunity and vaccination. There is also a final section which sets out the suggested priorities for future researches and the conclusions and recommendations arising from all the contributions and discussions. The high prevalence of B. melitensis infection in all the Mediterranean part of Europe was clearly evidenced by the Workshop. Among the final recommendations aiming at the eradication of this important and worrying sheep and goats infectious disease, standardization of diagnosis reagents and relevant methods on a European basis was unanimously emphasized to be a priority and urgent need.
