BIOCHEMICAL IDENTIFICATION OF MEAT SPECIES - PROCEEDINGS OF A SCIENTIFIC WORKSHOP HELD IN BRUSSELS ON NOVEMBER 27-28, 1984.
This publication contains the proceedings of a Scientific Workshop held in Brussels on 27th and 28th November 1984 entitled "Biochemical Identification of Meat Species". The meeting was organised under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities' Research Programme, as a co-ordination activity to bring together experts in the field of meat species identification. Twentythree specialists from within EEC and three from countries outside the community presented and discussed 21 papers during the course of the two days. The aim of the meeting was to discuss state-of-the-art developments in the science of meat speciation and in the technology of its application to some of the problems encountered in meat trading, not only between Community members but also between countries throughout the world. Having assessed the current situation, the meeting concluded that a number of areas in the science and technology offered scope for improvement, development or application; these are drawn together in the Conclusion at the end of the Proceedings. Arising from these deliberations, a Working Group of limited size will prepare agreed protocols for specific procedures, for example, the preparation of standard reference materials, standardization of certain analytical techniques, etc., again as itemised in the Conclusion. From this extension work, it is hoped that firm methodology will evolve which will be accepted by the legislator, trader and scientist alike, thereby promoting international trade in meat materials.
