Abstract

The concept of pollution may be considered in relation to the water uses as well as to the aquatic ecosystem. These concepts may be justified and it is possible to adopt them for the management and protection of the same water body. As an example of the aquatic ecosystem degradation, types of water pollution are discussed: eutrophication, heavy metals, radioactive pollution and acid depositions. The interrelationships between physical environment, pollutant and biota are discussed as well as the direct and indirect effects of the pollutants.
