Abstract

The present state of the theory of the magnetic solar cycle is reviewed and recent developments of the theory of coronal heating in terms of magnetic structures that are electrodynamically coupled to the photospheric velocity spectrum are presented. Explosive energy release in solar flares is discussed on the basis of a chain of plasma instabilities. The review concentrates on the magnetohydrodynamic aspects of the above mentioned topics and only briefly touches the microscopic aspect when necessary.
