HARMONIC EMISSION FROM THE QUARTER CRITICAL DENSITY SURFACE OF LASER PRODUCED PLASMAS
Harmonic emission at one half or three halves the laser frequency is evidence for the generation of plasmons near the quarter critical density surface. Such electron plasma waves are generated by either the Raman or two- plasmon decay instabilities. Observations show characteristic double peaked spectra at both harmonics for which there exist a variety of interpretations.
