Abstract

The developments in high performance permanent magnets are presently experiencing a period of rapid growth with the advent of a whole series of promising materials. Excellent opportunities now exist through the recent realization of a new permanent magnet material rich in iron and based on neodymium, iron and boron (Nd-Fe-B), which exhibits outstanding magnetic features, many of which surpass those presently obtainable with the Sm - Co family of magnetic materials. From both an economic and industrial point of view, these new Nd-Fe-B type magnets should have a bright future. A new degree of miniaturization of magnet circuits will be possible with new types of more powerful and more compact motors and other permanent magnetic devices. These will have a major impact in transport, consumer electronics, robotics, office automation and many other sectors. Nevertheless, if the full potential of these magnets is to be brought about and their large scale industrial application achieved, a considerable R & D effort will be required. The Workshop "Nd-Fe permanent magnets + their present and future application", was organized by the Directorate General for Science, Research and Development within the framework of the "Substitution and Materials Technologies" subprogramme (1982 - 1985) of the Commission of the European Communities (CEC). Fiftythree experts from nine European countries were invited to take part in the Workshop.
