Abstract

A review is given on atomic diffusion processes in nuclear fuels. Emphasis is put on the oxides UO-2 and (U,Pu)O-2, the carbides UC and (U,Pu)C, and the nitrides UN and (U, Pu)N, but ThO-2 and the metals U, Pu and Th are also treated to some extent. Self-diffusion, impurity diffusion, chemical diffusion and thermal diffusion are all discussed. For the ceramic fuels, the effect of deviations from stoichiometry, of build-up of fission products during reactor irradiation and of enhancement of diffusion by radiation are dealt with. Finally, a short review on fission gas behaviour is given.
