Abstract

The paper, presented as an introductory lecture to the CODATA Workshop on Materials Data Systems for Engineering, gives an introduction to engineering materials data with a view to the conditions and requirements for their representation in machine readable form. The materials data requirements for various technical applications are reviewed from the point of view of the materials scientist. The access to materials data through data bank networks is sketched as a future mode and compared with conventional data sources. Recommendations for the development of materials data banks conclude the paper.
