SUIVI RADIOMETRIQUE AU SOL DE CULTURES VIVRIERES PLUVIALES DANS LA REGION DU SAHEL
Since 1980, the Joint Research Centre of the European Communities is involved in a research activity called "Joliba" consisting, mainly, in the evaluation of remote sensing techniques for agricultural production forecasting in Sahelian countries. Since 1984, rain fed food crops are studied. This research takes into account crop differentiation and estimation of yield parameters. In this framework, some ground radiometric measurement campaigns have been organised, to study how plant phenology and cover percentage influence spectral behaviour. At the same time, work has been carried out to derive a more efficient method for data analysis. During the 1984 rainy season, relative reflectance measurements were collected on fourteen plots of: millet, sorghum, ground nuts and "fonio" in the Niger Delta Region (Segou, Republic of Mali) using a Multiband Milton Radiometer operating in the Landsat MSS spectral bands. The conclusions are: - the data analysis method, consisting in highlighting all angular relationships in the channel space, has proved to be an efficient interpretation tool; - the correlation between biomass index and yellowing index is quantified for all studied crops; - during the above-mentioned period, the bare soil effect is determinant to distinguish between millet and sorghum; sorghum shows a higher biomass index than millet; - the distinction between millet and sorghum on the one hand, and ground nuts on the other hand, is based on the shift between growth cycles; - it is hoped that a better spectral characterization of the studied objects will be obtained by measuring larger elementary surfaces. The next ground campaigns will be realized with this concept in mind.
