Abstract

After various selection processes based on the inventory of the circular structures discovered in Landsat images in the Massif central and the Massif armoricain, one of them was chosen - centered on the locality of Thoras (Margeride, France) - for a petrographic and structural study. In this way, the phenomena observed from space were located on the ground and their geological nature determined. Thus, the study brought out that the Thoras structure corresponds to the surface expression of a partly hidden granite dome derived from magmatic injection of one of the Margeride granite facies. The fact that this very first study has a positive result is an encouragement to new research work on the three hundred or so circular structures known in the two massifs.
