Abstract

The paper gives an historical survey of the birth and growth of Reliability as a scientific technical discipline in Europe. As a framework the four actual branches in which Reliability can be subdivided i.e. "Systems Reliability", "Structural Reliability", "Human Reliability" and "Software Reliability" are considered. At the end recent initiatives taken by the Commission of the European Communities in the domain, like European Safety and Reliability Association are briefly illustrated.
