  • ETUDE ET DEVELOPPEMENT DE PHOTOREACTEURS TUBULAIRES POUR LA PRODUCTION MAITRISEE DE BIOMASSE CELLULAIRE PHOTOSYNTHETIQUE "METHANIZABLE" ET DE BIOMASSE EXOCELLULAIRE SPECIFIQUE

Résumé

This report concludes the CEE contract number ESE-R-073-F-(SD) concerning the development of new technologies for controlled production of photosynthetic biomass. The technology chosen by the authors of confined tubular reactors for the culture itself has been proved successful up to a 10 m**2 level. It has been used for several different biotechnological processes using microalgae covering cellular biomass production as well as exocellular chemicals production such as polysaccharides or hydrocarbons. The structure of the reactor allows sophisticated instrumentation and control over the biotechnological events. It can be run continuously for several months. Good control of the process leads to better understanding of basic aspects of microalgae metabolism: photoperiodic rythms, carbon dioxide fixation, photoconversion yields increase. Downstream processing has been studied comparing reliable, well known methods (centrifugation, filtration) with more recent advances in that field (micro, ultra, diafiltration). Thermal regulation has received a lot of attention, considering the structure of the reactors used (thin layer). Estimates for the economic viability of such a biotechnology are proposed which show the bottlenecks for the development of solar biotechnology. Finally, as was originally planned, a 100 m**2 unit has been dimensionned and is ready for construction in 1984.
